The leaders, the performers and the quiet doers who shaped LGBTQIA+ life in Magandjin / Brisbane.

Brisbane Pride History Project wants to profile some of the heroes of our proud LGBTQIA+ communities. These may be the leaders who stood up in the face of discriminatory laws and social norms, the performers or DJs who brought us together for moments of joy, or the quiet doers whose contributions, while lesser known, played a vital role in bringing about the change that we all benefit from today.

LGBT Lives: Oral History Project

In 2010, the Queensland Association for Healthy Communities (now known as the Queensland Council for LGBTI Health, or QC) embarked on the LGBT Lives oral history project. The series captured the stories of 20 LGBTQIA+ Queenslanders, documenting personal narratives of identity, community, political activism and advocacy, and the development of queer spaces and organisations over several decades.

This collection was created by the Queensland Association for Healthy Communities and is held and made available by State Library of Queensland. It is not a Brisbane Pride History Project collection and we do not host the recordings.

Greg Weir Oral History

Greg Weir is a pioneering Queensland activist whose advocacy helped transform Australia’s LGBTQIA+ rights landscape. After being denied a teaching position in 1976 because of his involvement in a gay student group, Weir became a leading campaigner for civil liberties, HIV/AIDS awareness, anti-discrimination protections and homosexual law reform, playing a key role in the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Queensland in 1990.
