Marriage Equality: Brisbane Says Yes
On 15 November 2017, the results of the Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey were announced: 61.6% of Australians voted Yes. In Queensland, the Yes vote was 60.7%. Thousands gathered at Queens Gardens in Brisbane to watch the announcement on a big screen, erupting in tears and celebration as the results were read out.
The road to marriage equality had been long. Brisbane’s LGBTQ+ community had campaigned for years, with rallies at King George Square, letter-writing campaigns, and countless conversations. When the Marriage Amendment Act 2017 passed parliament on 7 December, couples across Brisbane began planning their weddings.
